I am NOT A psychiatrist or therapist, these are my own distraction therapy techniques that I do when I'm feeling blue and I think these might help with your bad days (✿◠‿◠)
I am super over analytical and my mind is always racing, I also tend to get really bad anxiety and it can keep me up at night. About 3 years ago I learned the technique of distraction therapy, which is basically utilizing calming activities to bring your mind to rest and reinstate a happier mood! My technique is to get cozy!
I love lighting a candle first. Floral and scents are my favorite, I tend to stay away from desert scented candles because they are much too sweet and overpowering.
Picking the perfect thing on Netflix or your favorite movie is also a great addition. I've been watching Portlandia basically every night this past week and I am a little late to the party but I love it! It is super quirky and witty! I also recommend old movies - I tend to watch Sabrina, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Funny Face until I pass out when I've had a rough day. Kid movies and cartoon also help! Disney movies are great! The Aristocats and Hercules are my fave when I'm feeling down.
TEA! I love making a cup of sleepy time tea or chamomile tea or even peppermint tea - all with honey and lemon to calm my nerves. I think using your favorite mug is also a great add on. The majority of my mugs are from Disneyland and remind me of my trips and my trips to come! A former therapist of mine used to tell me to make a cup of tea whenever I felt myself getting anxious to make a cup of tea. I thought she was totally full of it at the time, but I honestly didn't give it a chance! It works for me and I think it would make the night a bit more comforting.
Reading is also a great alternative to watching anything. I suggest easy reading - magazines, young adult novels, coffee table fashion books. Hemingway has been very calming and distracting to me since it takes me so out of my own environment.
Get in your PJs or anything your super comfy in and get into bed! I love washing my sheets, throwing on my San Francisco Giants oversized sweater with some yoga shorts and getting into bed! It sounds so backwards but for me if I've had a long day and I get home in the late evening I need my rest. Just know that tomorrow can be and will be better! Get warm and cozy and enjoy your tea!
But if you can't control your emotions or feel overwhelmed don't underestimate your feelings! Reach out to someone and talk. I always feel better after venting to my parents, my sister, or any willing friend. If you feel like you don't have anyone you can always call crisis help line. They are there to help and make sure you stay safe!
Take back your night for yourself and pamper yourself! I love you! The world loves you! The universe loves you! Enjoy your soothing nights and love yourself ♥
